Manufacturing Projects Requiring Construction or Installation Start with Process Engineering

McCownGordon Construction associates collaborating in the office

When facing new manufacturing construction or renovations to existing facilities, as a project owner you know the importance of finding the right company to tackle things. In the manufacturing industry, the design, implementation, control and optimization of industrial processes and machinery are driven by process engineering services. In Kansas City and across our entire service area, McCownGordon Construction excels at delivering manufacturing construction projects on time and within budget.

Wherever you are in your manufacturing design-build journey, it’s the right time to bring us in. We assist in design and site selection, perform engineering studies, and provide other preconstruction basics for brand new green field sites or for renovations to manufacturing facilities in an existing structure. You’re never alone in the big decisions when partnered with McCownGordon.

What sets manufacturing construction apart?

As complex, safety-minded spaces, manufacturing facilities require a thorough understanding of much more than the shell building and utility framework. The design must maximize every inch on a plant floor to create the perfect environment for fabrication. We must know where the drains go in the floors based on machinery and how to implement the roofing system to connect the utilities and the equipment—and that’s just scratching the surface.

When arranging machinery to maximize production, it’s extremely important to accurately capture locations. That’s where enhanced manufacturing services like laser scanning come in. Within tight spaces, using manual measuring tools isn’t feasible. These outdated methods often produce inaccurate measurements and are too laborious in tight manufacturing spaces.

Our virtual technology team has taken this drive for accuracy to the next level. We regularly implement laser scanning technology to produce 3D models of manufacturing facilities for our clients. These 3D laser scans can produce photo-realistic as-built drawings accurate to 1/16 of an inch. Our clients use these precise files for coordination, record-keeping and accurately capturing photo-realistic geometry of a specific space.

Millions of data points come together in a photo-realistic image. From there, our teams can create 3D models for our clients to visualize their spaces. By analyzing these scans and models, our teams can help reduce construction costs and operational costs.

Leveraging 85+ years of manufacturing construction expertise for better outcomes

The people-first mentality that drives our entire business creates an atmosphere where your goals become our goals, and from top to bottom our team is bent on success. We don’t need a team of 500 engineers to pull off expert manufacturing construction and facility, process and packaging engineering services. Our smaller engineering team has the same capabilities as larger firms, plus we get preconstruction and construction team members involved early.

The earlier we apply our construction expertise to the design, the earlier you get critical insight into the project. By obtaining cost and schedule certainty early in the process, you can make informed decisions that keep things on track.

Our expertise in occupied jobsites translates into smoothly working with extensions to existing operations in manufacturing lines. These intricate projects require us to control the construction environment while maintaining safe and operable working conditions for the manufacturing operation.McCownGordon delivers unmatched design-build expertise for these turnkey projects. We define the construction costs early in the process of facility development, helping you save time and money. We know as well as anyone that early cost and schedule certainty makes a huge overall difference. Our expertise added to our advanced technology capabilities, like laser scanning, BIM, CAD and virtual reality, and our best-in-class customer experience, make us the best partner for your manufacturing construction project.

Facing the challenges of a changing market

In the post-2020 world, we all face new challenges. Shortages and supply chain issues require a proactive approach to overcome in the world of construction. At one time we may have planned for packaging equipment to arrive onsite for installation within five months of ordering, more recently those delivery times stretch to about a year. Our goal will always be to minimize the impact of these issues on your project.

McCownGordon meets with two groups monthly to catch up with key trade partners in construction steel, concrete and other schedule-driving materials. Additionally, we meet with experts in macroeconomics and receive a global report regarding material cost trends in key trades and their estimates for markets and interest rates.

Unmatched food and beverage engineering experience

Food and beverage manufacturing remains a massive portion of the industries with ongoing needs for manufacturing design and construction. The manufacturing leadership team at McCownGordon brings 85+ years of combined engineering and construction experience in the food and beverage market. This depth of experience benefits our clients regardless of project type.

When undertaking a food and beverage manufacturing project, we must adhere to certain US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) requirements. During the design phase, we incorporate all regulations, cleanability requirements and other FDA and GMP standards.

Accurately complying with FDA and GMP standards can create a massive headache for companies that lack familiarity with the appropriate processes. Our experience specifically encompasses ensuring the facility meets the necessary requirements for health and safety.

Delivering turnkey manufacturing services and unparalleled experience

It’s not just our ability to understand and integrate all the different components of a project, from design to startup, that makes us the ideal partner for your successful manufacturing construction project, it’s the client experience we provide.

We measure client experience through net promoter score surveys, and with quality and safety programs. We gain a well-rounded approach and understanding of how we’re doing on the project as well as how we’re doing with the actual customer. McCownGordon remains committed to providing personal experiences and strong relationships in addition to top-tier quality contracting work.

No project too small, no project too large

We’re happy to provide our high quality facility, process and packaging manufacturing engineering and construction to owners with small to medium sized projects. We also have the resources and relationships to take on larger projects. Our recent projects ranged in size from $100,000 to $40 million. They included deliverables centered around renovations, addition of clean rooms and air locks, expansion of existing manufacturing lines and production facilities.

Whether brought in from the very beginning or further along in the process, our dedication and expertise is sure to spell success for your project.

Completed manufacturing construction projects

For the Amazon Fulfillment Center in Kansas City, KS, we demolished existing buildings on the 400-acre site, performed site development, added a new turn lane on 99th Street and built a more than 1 million square foot precast warehouse and distribution facility.

We are working with Garmin in expanding their corporate headquarters manufacturing and distribution center in Olathe, Kansas, to improve productivity and employee wellbeing. From the beginning, we guided Garmin through an extensive master plan analysis to weigh factors including cost, scheduling, site limitations and disruption to current operations. Armed with knowledge, they chose to undergo a significant overhaul to the manufacturing and distribution needs and built a 750,000 square foot horizontal custom-designed facility.

The Sanofi Allegra Pharmaceutical Facility offered its fair share of challenges, being operational during this multi-phased renovation. We upgraded this 100,000 square foot existing two-story pharmaceutical facility for distribution and packaging of products.

Our team constructed explosion-rated rooms, with work taking place in various places both inside and outside of the plant—which remained operational with no interruption to production. Construction included installation of new chemical storage and feed systems, solution piping, dust collection systems, renovations and more.

We added clean room manufacturing space to provide creative and flexible settings for engineering teams with upgraded automation. Thanks to our site-specific safety plan, existing operations suffered minimal disruption.

Engineering, procurement and construction

Our engineering, procurement and construction services provide a major benefit to project owners with smaller teams without the purchasing power of huge international corporations. We design the layout, procure the equipment and oversee the startup and commissioning of the equipment.

As EPC contractors, we apply our expertise to concept development, feasibility studies, front-end engineering and design, commissioning and operations and more. We remain agnostic regarding equipment vendors, giving us the power to find the best choice for each unique project. EPC services are just another way we provide trusted turnkey project solutions in the field of manufacturing construction.
