The facility’s commons area greets guests and ushers them into the dedicated space for the Johnson County Museum that features the county’s first All-Electric House, which was moved into the new space intact. The area also features a temporary exhibit area for traveling shows, a kids play area and climate-controlled archival space.
An indoor/outdoor event space includes a 350-seat black box theatre and rehearsal space. The event space focuses on flexibility and includes movable interior partitions that connect to an outdoor patio on the building’s south side.
The remaining areas feature offices, classrooms, a dance studio, full catering kitchen and support areas. The team replaced the entire MEP system, which included two steel mezzanines to house the units.
The site was rebuilt with new landscaping and retaining walls along with a new storm sewer system and outdoor lighting. The team replaced portions of the exterior with architectural metal panels, EIFS and curtain wall while keeping consistent with the facility’s iconic facade.
