Project Case Study

Investors at Terra Capital and head chef Michael Smith wanted to collaborate and create a new space for a casual Italian dining experience, named Farina. The mixed-use approach includes a small art gallery and upper level offices. Their vision now resides in the two-story building at 19th and Baltimore in the heart of the Kansas City Crossroads district where arts, entertainment and dining collide.

McCownGordon was selected to renovate the existing building, which was most recently used a large gallery for the Kemper Museum. Renovations for the mixed-use building include both interior and exterior work and the addition of a new elevator and stair tower.

Transitioning the first floor from a gallery space, the build out includes a new kitchen space and restaurant layout. The second floor includes office space. The scope of construction activities includes exterior restoration, new windows, new MEP and fire protection systems, and new bathrooms.

Working in an existing building, the project encountered unforeseen conditions on both the interior and exterior work. Our team creatively re-sequenced the schedule to allow work to continue. A team approach between the owner, designers and our team enabled fast resolution to issues, ultimately achieving the owner’s goal of substantial completion before the year-end, for a grand restaurant opening.
