The facility’s operating budget relies on annual revenue from hosting events, so additions and renovations to the project must occur while the venue continues to host events. Shawnee County selected McCownGordon to complete the project as a trusted advisor to help manage the complex phased construction.
The events center includes multiple venues on the property: Landon Arena, the Exhibition Hall, the Domer Arena (an equine arena with associated stalls and barns), and shares the site with a convention center and hotel. All three venues required extensive renovations, including a complete seating replacement upgrade, new A/V systems and new LED arena lighting in Landon Arena. Major renovations to the concourses, suites, kitchens and locker rooms were also completed.
Our team’s complex phased schedule and a heavily coordinated phasing and logistics plan allowed for all events—30 large events from basketball to ice hockey to concerts—to continue operating throughout construction over the two-year project. This project involved continuous coordination with the Fire Marshal, security, food service and owner to ensure and maintain a clean and safe facility for all visitors and staff.
Additions occurred on all sides of the property to expand each of the venues; Landon Arena and Exhibition Hall received brand new exterior skins made up of sleek metal facades. The addition to the Exhibition Hall required permanent shoring being constructed between the existing building and the adjacent hotel tunnel.
