Wichita East High School Science Wing Renovation

Project Case Study
In January of 2022, Wichita East High School vacated its 16-classroom science wing due to structural integrity issues. The original school was built in 1923 and this portion was renovated from a gymnasium into classrooms in 2000. Once hired, the team immediately started demolition on select areas of ceiling to allow necessary structural evaluation by the architectural team at various existing conditions. After the plan was in place, further interior demolition was necessary.

Shoring was installed to support the structure during the demolition of the north wall. The team took special care to salvage existing masonry that remained part of the building.

Helical piers were used to permanently stabilize the foundation of the building and a new CMU/brick wall is being built back in place in addition to re-roofing. The science rooms also received new casework and finishes in time for students to return to class for the building’s 100th anniversary.
