McCownGordon was selected by South Dakota State University to complete a renovation and additions to their Animal Disease Research & Diagnostic Laboratory (ADRDL). The project included 74,500 square feet of new construction and 36,000 square feet of renovation.

The project included 3.5 acres of site development, including 500 linear feet of steam tunnel. It features laboratory spaces, animal holding areas, incinerator, vehicle wash/bay, autoclaves, sterilizers and fume hoods. The lab spaces are specialized for areas such as molecular diagnostics, virology, microbiology, bacteriology, serology, pathology and necropsy.

Laboratory-grade finishes such as casework, finishes, stainless steel, epoxy flooring, rubber flooring are included for enhanced durability. The MEP-critical project features BSL Level 3 laboratories and very specific laboratory finishes.

The team faced multiple phases and worked around harsh winters in South Dakota. With many sustainable features, the facility has achieved LEED Silver certification.
