The Health Education Building (HEB) sets a new standard for health science education, with national significant for fostering interprofessional and interdisciplinary team learning. The space provides technology-enhanced environments for experiential learning, including learning studios, classrooms, a medical simulation center, clinical skills labs, and spaces that enhance the social and collaborative aspects of learning.
The new building serves as a gateway to campus, featuring an enclosed pedestrian sky bridge connecting the education building to the main hospital campus. Spanning the busy 39th street, a crucial ambulance route, the bridge construction maintained two open lanes on the four-lane road. Extensive planning with stakeholders and Kansas’ Unified Government strategic phasing, deviating from traditional bridge construction. Instead of completing full sections at once, the team adopted a typewriter approach, constructing steel lengthwise and iterating until all scopes were complete.
