Kiowa County Schools

Project Case Study
When an EF-5 (enhanced fujita scale) tornado devastated 95 percent of Greensburg, Kansas, destroying the only K-12 school, the community made an aggressive commitment to rebuild all City buildings under the LEED Certification rating system. The new school meets LEED Platinum, the highest level of certification through the United States Green Building Council.

The building includes a high school, junior high and elementary school, with shared support facilities of an auditorium, stadium athletic fields with track, two gyms, cafeteria and iTV classrooms – an interactive technology technique for teaching multiple classrooms from different schools simultaneously.

Significant daylighting, indoor air quality, energy efficient mechanical systems, environmentally friendly building materials, wind generation, ground source heating and cooling (with a total of 96 geo-thermal wells), water usage control, capture rainwater re-use and native landscaping are included among its many sustainable features.

Working with the City of Greensburg and surrounding communities, USD 422, FEMA, and subcontractors in surrounding areas, McCownGordon delivered the project on time and within budget. In fact, the athletic fields with track and locker rooms were delivered a year early to allow the school to host sporting events. Achieving an aggressive schedule and extensive coordination with multiple stakeholders, the school opened August 2010.
