Building a Brighter Future for KCK: A Look Inside the Community’s Newest Facility

The recently completed, Kansas City Kansas Community Education, Health and Wellness Center is poised to transform the community. The center, a collaboration between Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC), Swope Health and Community America Credit Union (CACU), aims to address the educational, health and financial needs of the community under one roof. This center is more than a building – it’s a shared investment in the future of Kansas City, Kansas, bringing together essential services, workforce development and community resources in an inspirational way.

Flooded with natural light and surrounded by inviting outdoor spaces and landscaping, the Community Education, Health and Wellness Center was intentionally created to serve as a destination in the heart of downtown Kansas City, Kansas. The project represents a bold commitment to reinvesting in a community that has experienced decades of disinvestment. Together, the three partners hope the center will spark continued revitalization throughout the surrounding area while creating new opportunities for residents. Each organization will occupy dedicated space within the facility, providing a range of services, programs and educational offerings tailored to the community’s needs.

CommunityAmerica Credit Union will offer on-site banking services, including a drive-thru ATM accessible to the public. To help build long-term financial stability, the credit union also plans to host financial literacy classes and educational workshops within the facility.

New to the KCK community, Swope Health will occupy the entire fourth floor, expanding access to critical healthcare services. Its space will include maternal and children’s health services, dental care, ultrasound rooms, patient procedure rooms, social worker offices and pediatric and behavioral health therapy rooms. These services will provide convenient, affordable healthcare options for families throughout the community.

KCKCC will occupy the largest portion of the facility and relocate its Automation Engineer Technology program to the center. The move will provide students with expanded learning environments, enhanced technology and modern laboratory spaces designed to support hands-on workforce training.

The college will also introduce a new commercial construction program, providing students with an overview of the construction industry and the many career paths it offers. An outdoor dirt yard will allow students to gain hands-on experience with excavation equipment and earthwork fundamentals, while dedicated woodworking spaces will further support experiential learning. KCKCC plans to offer programs of varying lengths to meet students where they are and provide accessible pathways into high-demand careers.

Additional educational opportunities will be available through technology, biology, biomanufacturing and computer labs. The center also features a virtual reality suite, recording studio and art studio, creating opportunities for innovation, creativity and skill development across a wide range of disciplines.

One of the facility’s most distinctive features is its connection to the site’s history. The project transformed the location of the former Seventh Street Methodist Church, preserving key elements of the historic structure throughout the new development. Original wood trusses, stained-glass windows and church pews were carefully salvaged and restored, while brick, limestone and metal caps were repurposed within the building. These historic elements will be showcased in the art gallery and shared community conference room, ensuring the story of the site remains a meaningful part of the facility’s future.

The Community Education, Health and Wellness Center is more than a collection of services. It is a catalyst for opportunity where healthcare, education and financial empowerment come together to create lasting impact. By expanding access to care, strengthening workforce development and connecting residents to critical resources, this landmark project is helping write a new chapter for downtown Kansas City, Kansas and building a stronger, healthier and more prosperous community for generations to come.
