McCownGordon is working with Gilmore & Associates to transform the existing 1940's historic Garfield Elementary School in Abilene, KS, into a multi-unit independent senior living facility. The independent market-rate facility will market to seniors in Abilene and Dickinson County. The facility will feature 19 apartments, commons spaces, exercise facility, patio/courtyard and community gardens.
Exterior work includes masonry restoration and installing new windows and doors that resemble the originals. Most of the work will happen on the interior and includes new MEP systems and converting existing classrooms into individual apartments.
The project is classified as a historic renovation and is listed with the National Historic Register. One of the project’s largest challenges is the strict requirements to meet the state historic preservation and National Parks requirements. The team will ensure the critical factors of maintaining the original architecture are achieved while also meeting all the requirements for a senior living space.
