Project Case Study

The North Kansas City School Districts’ desire to combine all Early Childhood Special Education in one location along with the growing district enrollment rates led the district to the adaptive reuse of the existing strip mall. McCownGordon was selected through a a qualifications-based process for the Early Education Center.

What once was a Hobby Lobby and Price Chopper is now one of the largest early learning facilities in the State of Missouri, serving over 900 early learners ages three to five. The 112,00 SF Early Education Center is broken up into learning communities, designed to be seen through the eyes of a child.

The renovations included gutting and demo of the current stores to create one facility, adding a new roof, skylights, HVAC systems, new under-slab plumbing and electrical, added a front entry lobby, new classrooms, and a kitchen. Due to COVID, the project start date was pushed, requiring creative preconstruction solutions like getting the demolition and roofing packages out early to complete phase one on time.
