Project Case Study
The updated and modernized science laboratory and teaching facility better meets the needs of students and provides flexibility for the future. Disciplines included biology, chemistry, physics, geology, astronomy, biotechnology, environmental science and physical science as well as dedicated undergraduate research spaces, chemistry instrumentation space and support spaces.
Overall, the team renovated more than 22 laboratory classrooms including BSL-2 facilities in the microbiology, biotechnology, and prep and research areas. The team implemented multiple eco-friendly practices aligning with JCCC’s sustainability goals. The team worked collaboratively with JCCC and the design team to develop a comprehensive phasing plan to minimize disruption to students, faculty and staff and maintain the learning environment.
The plan divided the project into five phases including building out seven laboratory classrooms to temporarily relocate classes. The temporary labs provided the space needed to keep the teaching curriculum intact and shortened the construction duration from 30 months to 18.
