Project Case Study

McCownGordon and SFS Architecture were selected for a design build project for the city of Manhattan’s new recreation center and middle school additions. During the selection process the design team led a 44-person steering committee appointed by the city commission, to prioritize the programming of the facility and select exterior design options. From there the project was taken to guaranteed maximum price at schematic drawings.

USD 383 provided the land to the city in trade for access to the gymnasiums once they are complete. There are two different, nearly identical buildings on two different sites.

The two sites consist of four basketball courts, bathrooms, administrative offices, community gathering spaces, multipurpose event spaces and group fitness rooms. There is also an elevated track above the courts allowing teams to practice indoors if there are weather implications. Both sites are also filled with an abundance of storage, allowing teams an opportunity to better take care of their equipment. The recreation centers are pre-engineered metal buildings. With the buildings on the middle schools’ campus, students have the accessibility to use the facilities before and after school. .
