While renovating the Independence City Hall, originally constructed in 1916, historic preservation of the classical revival-style building was a priority while also implementing the necessary upgrades to enhance the facility into a more functional space for the employees and community. Our team patched and restored original plaster walls and ceilings, retained marble wainscot and terrazzo in public corridors, and restored historic wood door casing and trims. All mechanical/HVAC, electrical, and plumbing were replaced throughout the building to enhance building efficiency. The new space includes administration offices, city clerk offices, and the Independence Police Department.
Throughout preconstruction, our team worked through existing issues that included ventilation concerns and basement waterproofing. Our team found ways to repair these existing issues while the City’s budget and on schedule.
Following six years of occupying the second floor of an old hospital, the Independence Fire Department and EMS moved into their new facility. The Fire-EMS expansion adds 11,000 SF to the building, allowing for a drive-through bay and added room for supplies, equipment cleaning and disinfection, living quarters, offices, training space, and a fitness room. While improving efficiencies and response times, the crews were also able to solidify the location as their permanent headquarters.Â
Due to the project being at two separate sites, open communication between the McCownGordon team and the City was placed as a top priority.Â
