After multiple successful projects in the South Dakota region, Woodbury Development selected McCownGordon as the construction manager for the Poet BioProducts Institute. The facility includes classrooms, laboratories and space for research development. The Bioproducts laboratory is located at SDSU’s research park and is a place where students and researchers will develop new ways to use natural South Dakota products, such as corn and soybeans, as bioproducts.
During preconstruction, the team investigated a precast structural system in lieu of the originally designed steel structure to mitigate supply chain challenges and market volatility. The team engaged the precast contractor early to help with the design of the footings resulting in an early structural package and a fast-tracked schedule.
The new facility is constructed with precast interior and exterior walls for high bay space with a steel roof, laboratory casework, chemical fume hoods and a VAV HVAC system. In addition, the center boasts a large, voluminous atrium that houses a dynamometer to support the advanced curriculum. The second-floor overlook provides a unique view of the gallery space at the northeast corner of the building.
