McCownGordon has completed multiple projects for the Kansas City Art Institute for more then a decade. When the institute’s ceramics space needed an upgrade they once again turned to our firm. The team completed a renovation of the existing ceramics space and installation of a mezzanine level that created new work/fabrication space for ceramics students. The materials included concrete floors, steel supports and exposed wood giving the space a truly industrial feel. The project included removing and replacing the existing interior concrete floor, building a structural steel with wood floor joist mezzanine level providing two new offices for staff as well as a small library space. Eight new student work stations outfitted with dust collection vent hoods prevent dust particles from impacting new artwork.
