Johnny Kaw statue gets plaza

Manhattan, Kan. (KSNT) - A Kansas folk legend is getting a big makeover in Manhattan's City Park. City leaders held a ceremonial ground breaking at the Johnny Kaw statue Monday.

The statue has been around since 1966, and it recieved some minor modifications last year. Now the park area around the statue it going to be converted into a plaza in honor of the folk legend. The Johnny Kaw plaza will have more lighting, lime-stone rock seating and story panels that tell the legend of Johnny Kaw.
The $279,000 is funded by money donations from community members and donations of materials and labor from local businesses. Some of the key partners are McCownGordon Construction, McMillan Architects and the City of Manhattan.
The ribbon cutting and dedication is set to be on May 9th for Johnny Kaw's 53rd birthday party.
