With an eye on growth, Kansas City's McCownGordon Construction LLC is opening an office in Wichita.
The firm already has more than $200 million in projects under contract in the Wichita area, including a $41 million medical complex, Patterson Health Center, which is named after the late Cerner Corp. CEO and co-founder Neal Patterson. Other Kansas City-area ties also have led to projects in the Wichita area, helping McCownGordon build a reputation in the market that's spurred even more contracts in the past 18 months.
McCownGordon is searching for office space and plans to have operations up and running by year's end. It will be McCownGordon's third office, and it marks a push to execute on the company's multiyear strategic plan of growing throughout the Midwest and in the Kansas City market, CEO Ramin Cherafat told the Kansas City Business Journal. It was an easy decision choosing Wichita because the company built critical mass there both in projects and its employees living in the area.
"I think it gives us a chance to build more relationships in the community, and the more relationships we build, it definitely opens up more opportunities for our company," Cherafat said.
Beyond growing in Wichita, the new office opens doors in Oklahoma because of its proximity to markets such as Stillwater and Oklahoma City, he said. McCownGordon has three projects in Oklahoma that are tied to the health care and medical research sectors.
McCownGordon's strategic plan embraces one of the executive team's primary goals – providing more growth opportunities for employees, Cherafat said. It allows employees to tackle new challenges and become more engaged, ultimately leading to happier employees and better customer service.
"I definitely see more offices in our future throughout the Midwest," he said. "(The Wichita office) brings a ton of opportunity for other people in our company to go and be a part of something that's grassroots. It ties back to our strategic plan to always be focused on being one of the best places to work."
That strategy is evidenced by the company being named as a Best Places to Work honoree multiple years in a row. McCownGordon has grown to nearly 400 employees and ranks No. 3 on the Kansas City Business Journal's list of Kansas City's Top General Contractors, with $401 million in local billings in 2017.
