McCownGordon Construction, the Kansas City-based firm that announced earlier this year plans to add a Wichita office, apparently has zeroed in on a location.
Mitch Binns, who will lead the new office here as its senior project manager, says it's looking like Old Town will be the site.
"There's so much excitement with our culture," Binns says. "We're close to getting a spot very close to the (Wichita Business Journal) offices, actually. We're pumped about it. We're excited to get in the space soon if we can get it nailed down."
McCownGordon, which also has an office in Manhattan, is no stranger to the south-central Kansas.
Including work at Rock Regional Hospital in Derby and with the Derby and Newton school districts, the company is managing more than $200 million in projects in the greater Wichita market.
It was recently recognized by Fortune as a top-100 medium-sized company to work for in 2018. In fact, the firm came in at No. 19 on the Fortune list, which judged companies nationally.
"We're excited about the recognition," Binns says. "We attribute it to the employee culture that's been organically grown. I think when we went 100-percent employee owned, that only ignited the fire further."
For years, McCownGordon has also been a fixture as a Kansas City Business Journal "Best Places to Work" honoree. Binns says he hopes to be working out of a new Wichita space by January.
McCownGordon has about 380 employees. Binns says he expects the number of Wichita-area employees of the firm — currently about a dozen — to double in the next year or so.
