The City of Independence is breaking ground on a new communications center officials hope will improve the delivery of emergency services.

The 6,000 square foot facility will include room for 14 police and fire dispatch consoles where dispatchers will take 911 calls from the public.

The workspace will be a big step up, said Eileen Weir, Independence mayor.

"It's a very stressful job and one that requires us to provide for the opportunity for them to take their breaks, to have adequate space and the adequate technology for them to perform their duties," Weir said.

The city is using proceeds from the Public Safety Sales Tax to pay for the new communications center. The sales tax was approved by voters in 2004 and extended for another 12 years in 2016.

The construction site is located at East 23rd Street and R.D. Mize Road.
